This presentation will provide an overview of the primary principles of peritoneal dialysis, highlighting its mechanism and differences between available modalities. Further challenges involved in peritoneal dialysis management will also be discussed, including medication dosing and administration.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to

  • Describe the physiologic mechanism of peritoneal dialysis, including solute clearance and ultrafiltration.
  • Differentiate between two common modalities of peritoneal dialysis and their place in therapy.
  • Recall the benefits, limitations, and common complications associated with peritoneal dialysis.
  • Identify the clinical resources available to guide management of antimicrobials for peritoneal dialysis-related peritonitis.
