This presentation will provide an overview on the updates to the complicated urinary tract infection guidelines from the IDSA. This presentation will cover the four-step approach to choosing appropriate empiric therapy as well as recommendations for definitive antibiotic regimens, duration of antibiotic treatment, as well as timing of intravenous to oral antibiotic transitions.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to

  • Differentiate uncomplicated and complicated urinary tract infections using the updated guideline-defined criteria.
  • Identify recommended empiric antimicrobial therapies for complicated urinary tract infections.
  • Select appropriate definitive therapy including drug choice and duration using culture results.
  • Apply the four-step approach to formulate evidence-based treatment plans for patients with complicated urinary tract infections.
