North Carolina has issued a series of continuing education requirements for licensed professionals. Advocate Health has several offerings to help our licensed professionals meet these requirements.
Requirements are subject to change. Each professional is responsible for verifying and meeting the requirements for their specific licensure.
Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs)
- Continuing education must be obtained through approved providers and meet North Carolina Board of Nursing requirements. There are no statewide pharmacotherapeutics hour requirements beyond those required for maintaining certification and controlled substance prescribing education

Dentists
- Continuing education must be directly related to patient care, obtained through approved providers, and meet North Carolina State Board of Dental Examiners requirements.

Nurses
- Continuing education must be obtained through approved providers and meet North Carolina Board of Nursing requirements.

Pharmacists:
- Continuing education must be relevant to the practice of pharmacy and obtained through providers accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) or the North Carolina Association of Pharmacists (NCAP).

Pharmacy Technicians:
- Registration is required. Pharmacy technicians must be registered with the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy to practice.
- North Carolina does not require continuing education (CE) for registered pharmacy technicians at the state level. Continuing education requirements may vary based on employer policies or national certification requirements.
- Pharmacy technicians must comply with all registration and practice requirements established by the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy

Physicians:
- Continuing education must be relevant to the physician's current or intended specialty or area of practice and obtained through approved providers recognized by the North Carolina Medical Board.

Physician Assistants:
- Continuing education must be obtained through approved providers and meet North Carolina Medical Board requirements.

Psychologists
- Completion of the North Carolina Psychology Board's Ethics Refresher prior to license renewal
- CE hours must be obtained through approved sponsors and documented through CE Broker.
- Continuing education must be obtained through approved providers and meet North Carolina Psychology Board requirements.

Social Workers:
- Continuing education must be relevant to social work practice and obtained through approved providers. Up to a portion of CE may be completed through approved distance learning activities.
