Welcome to the Illinois Licensure Requirements from IDFPR

Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) has issued a series of continuing education requirements for licensed professionals. Advocate Health has several offerings to help our licensed professionals meet these requirements. Requirements are subject to change, and each professional is responsible for ensuring that they are meeting the requirements for their licensure. 

Nurses & APRNs: Click here for complete information about IL state licensure requirements for Nursing. All requirements below count towards the 20 CE hours for RNs/LPNs and 80 CE hours for APRNs (50 accredited hours and 20 pharmacotherapeutic hours, 10 of which must focus on opioids/addiction). The next renewal deadline is May 31, 2026. See below for several activities that help meet these requirements. Please note, that not all the activities below are required for all nurses. Please click the link above for details on what is required for your role. 

Pharmacists: A Registered Pharmacist (RPh) is required to complete 30 hours of continuing education each 24-month license cycle ending March 31 of even-numbered years (except for the first license cycle, when no CE is required). The CE must be completed during the 24 months before the expiration date printed on the license. The pharmacist CE must include the following topics/categories:

  • 1 hour Sexual Harassment Prevention training
  • 1 hour Implicit Bias Awareness training
  • 1 hour Cultural Competency training

Pharmacy Technicians:  A Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) is required to complete 20 hours of continuing education each 24-month license cycle ending March 31 of even-numbered years (except for the first license cycle, when no CE is required). The CE must be completed during the 24 months before the expiration date printed on the license. The technician CE must include the following topics/categories:

  • 1 hour Pharmacy Laws, Rules, and Ethics
  • 1 hour Patient Safety

Physicians:  Click here for complete information about IL state licensure requirements. All of the special CME requirements noted count toward the 150 CME hours required for renewal.  The next renewal deadline is July 31, 2026.
