Shaking off the Shakes: Phenobarbital in Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome Recorded Presentation
Overview
According to the National Center for Drug Abuse Statistics, more than 140,000 Americans die from the effects of alcohol in an average year. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services reports that from January 2021 until September 2024, there were 8,566,725 ED visits due to alcohol. Benzodiazepines have been historically considered first line agents for treatment of alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS). Phenobarbital, a long-acting barbiturate, may be beneficial in AWS through a different mechanism of action and is currently recommended in the guidelines for treatment of severe AWS. The goal of this discussion is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of monotherapy phenobarbital for AWS.
