Safe by Design: A Human Factors Engineering Approach to Patient Safety
Human Factors Engineering (HFE) is a discipline that studies the interaction between people and their working environment. As the landscape of the profession of pharmacy evolves, there has been a push to improve the efficiency and workflow of pharmacy work systems. Understanding these work systems from an HFE perspective can improve its safety and reliability. The purpose of this presentation is to introduce the concepts of HFE, highlight the associated frameworks within, and review its application within pharmacy.

This course is intended for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.

- Recognize Human Factors Engineering and its relevance in a healthcare setting
- Identify principles of Human Factors Engineering and their role in improving patient safety
- Examine the applications of a Human Factors Engineering approach to patient safety within pharmacy
