Post Acute / Post-inpatient Care of the Sepsis Survivor: The Thrive Program

While sepsis mortality has declined over the last 20 years, more septic patients are living to experience physical, psychological, and/or cognitive deficits months to years after their original illness. Post Sepsis Syndrome (PSS) characterizes these sepsis survivors who suffer from these long term sequelae. Those sepsis patients that require ICU care may even develop Post Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS), which is similar to PSS and is marked by physical, psychological or cognitive deficits after an ICU stay and can last for months to years.  There are a variety of potential mitigating processes that can play a role in managing PSS/ PICS: Limiting deep sedation, encouraging early mobility, instituting aggressive PT/OT, instituting ICU diaries and creating post-ICU clinics.

This course is intended for Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Infectious Disease, Hospitalist, Pulmonology, Intensivist, Emergency Medicine, PA, APN, RN, Pharmacy, Laboratory, Risk Mgmt, QI & Other Interested Professionals

Upon completion of the activity the participant should be able to:

  • Understand the long term sequelae of sepsis and PSS/PICS and consider potential strategies to manage these patients.
