Overview of Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia - EM
As of Jan 1, 2023 a new Illinois law mandates that every licensed health care professional who has direct patient interaction with adults age 26 years old and older must take at least an hour-long course on how to diagnose, treat, and care for patients with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. The curriculum within the course will focus on how to identify and diagnose Alzheimer’s, effective communication strategies, and management and care planning. The health care professional will need to take such a course once per their license renewal period
Target Audience
This course is designed for physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.

At the end of this session, learners should be able to:
- Recognize the importance in making an early diagnosis of cognitive impairment in older adults
- Review the different levels of cognitive impairment
- Review the diagnosis and currently available treatments of Alzheimer’s disease
- Review strategies for dementia risk reduction
- Review upcoming treatments for Alzheimer’s disease
