This enduring material reviews the appropriate use and interpretation of urine drug testing in patients receiving controlled substances. Through real-world cases and expert discussion, learners will gain practical strategies for test selection, result interpretation, and management of unexpected findings to support safe and effective patient care.

This course is intended for physicians, nurses and other health care professionals.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this session, learners should be able to:

  • Differentiate between commonly used urine drug testing methodologies and their appropriate clinical applications. 
  • Interpret urine drug screen results, including common causes of false-positive and false-negative findings. 
  • Identify signs of specimen adulteration and simulated compliance. 
  • Apply best practices for documentation, patient communication, and follow-up when unexpected drug screen results occur.
