GSH RN Advanced Skills - Respiratory and Stroke 2025: May

Overview

This course is designed to enhance nursing skills after orientation for nurses that care for patients that have respiratory diagnosis, such as COPD and hypercapnia, and strokes. It is an in-person course includes a lecture with active learning strategies, such as small group discussion and simulations. It also includes hands-on portions with basic ventilator training and how to care for patients with tracheostomies.

Target Audience

This course is intended for Good Shepherd RNs.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this session, learners should be able to:

  1. Differentiate "stroke mimics" from stroke-like symptoms and correctly perform the NIH, discuss site-specific plans for Stroke Alerts, and apply current DNV stroke standards in  daily practice.
  2. Recognize oxygen delivery devices and apply them to patient specific scenarios.
  3. Identify standards of care for patients with an artificial airway including emergency response
  4. Describe nursing responsibilities and assessments related to oxygen delivery and artificial airways
