Decoding Stroke Mimics: Avoiding the tPA Oops Moment Recorded Presentation

This continuing education course will cover tPA use in stroke mimic patients. The presentation will cover the clinical presentation and diagnostic features distinguishing stroke mimics from ischemic stroke, review evidence-based studies and guidelines on the benefits and risks of tPA use in these cases and discuss strategies to minimize tPA misuse while optimizing patient care for stroke mimics.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this session, learners should be able to:

  1. Recognize conditions that frequently present with stroke-like symptoms compared to stroke.
  2. Identify key clinical and diagnostic features that distinguish ischemic strokes from mimics.
  3. Analyze evidence-based literature on the risks and benefits of tPA (Tissue Plasminogen Activator) administration in patients with stroke mimics.
  4. Examine the clinical and resource utilization impacts of administering tPA to stroke mimic patients.
  5. Evaluate scenarios to enhance clinical reasoning and decision-making when managing patients with suspected stroke mimics.
