Core Competency in Pain Assessment: General Considerations and Anatomy/Physiology
Target Audience
Those who work in Aurora Pain Clinics, including Physicians, PA’s, Psychologists, NP’s, Psychiatrists, EM, FM, Social Workers, Substance Abuse Counselors.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this educational experience, the participant will be able to demonstrate expertise in:
- ACCP’s philosophy, regulatory/legal considerations, and scope of practice.
- The approach to the pain patient, including optimizing communication and patient satisfaction.
- Techniques of motivational interviewing.
- Definitions of key concepts in pain management
- The principal components of pain anatomy (learning every area of the brain that processes pain is not required, particularly since some of them remain ill-defined).
- How pain is detected, transmitted to the spinal cord, modified, and sent to higher centers for perception.
- Neuroplasticity in response to continued stimulation
- The differences between acute and chronic pain
