Clinical Issues in Couple and Family Therapy Series: Effective Relational Work that Holds the Baby in Mind

November 12, 2025

Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health (IECMH) is a specialty within systemic/relational practice that supports children from birth through five years old and those who care for them. We know that mental health begins prenatally, and the mental health of infants and young children is inextricably linked to the mental health of their caregivers. This workshop will provide basic elements of IECMH practice, including early brain development, attachment and attunement, and “holding the baby in mind.” Content will reflect the chronological patterns of psychotherapy to include what IECMH aspects to incorporate into assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and expanding the system to provide effective and culturally humble clinical work with dyads and triads. The workshop content will also discuss Perinatal Mental Health and key aspects to look for when clinicians learn that a parent or caregiver is within the first year following the birth or adoption of a baby, to address perinatal mood disorders early on, and lay the best foundation for optimal attachment. Through the use of case studies, small and large group discussion, this workshop will interweave concepts and new knowledge about this critical period to support the dyad effectively. Lastly, presenters will briefly introduce specific interventions and modalities such as Child-Parent Psychotherapy (CPP), Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), as well as evidence-based models to address parent-child difficulties and perinatal mental health concerns.

This conference is being held virtually.
