Case Studies for Opioid Management: Palliative Care Focus

This is a review of current practice of opioid use in palliative care, conducted from the perspective of a practicing clinician working in the increasingly complex area of symptom control.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this session, learners should be able to:

  1. Describe the safe use of opioids in hospice and palliative care
  2. Identify when to co-prescribe naloxone for these patients
  3. Discuss the prevalence of persistent opioid use in cancer patients
  4. Define the differences between addiction, and dependency
  5. Describe the indicators and process of opioid weaning
