This presentation will give an overview of infection risks in different hematologic malignancies and treatments for these types of cancers. It will then focus on appropriate medications for bacterial, viral, and fungal infection prophylaxis as well as common drug interactions and other clinical challenges with using these drugs.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to

  • Describe patient and treatment specific factors that determine risk category for infection
  • Distinguish between different types of immunocompromised states in hematological malignancies and how they affect prophylactic approach
  • Determine how therapeutic regimen and patient risk factors affect infectious prophylaxis initiation and duration.
  • Understand common adverse effects and drug interactions of anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and antifungal agents in order to build a customized prophylactic regimen
