This content of this presentation will highlight the complexities of venous thromboembolism (VTE) treatment and prevention in the obstetric population. Alterations to Virchow’s Triad during pregnancy, risk factors for VTE, screening criteria, and treatment considerations will be detailed to enable the learner to feel confident managing VTE in the expectant mother.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this session, learners should be able to:

  1. Identify physiologic changes during pregnancy that increase risk for venous thromboembolism
  2. Evaluate modifiable risk factors for thromboembolism in obstetric patients used to guide anticoagulation 
  3. Utilize risk stratification tools to develop anticoagulant pharmacotherapy plans for a pregnant patient
  4. Assess anticoagulant pharmacotherapy that can be utilized during the gestational period including intrapartum and postpartum
