Advocate Health Anti-Human Trafficking Healthcare Symposium
Human trafficking is a crime, a human rights violation, and a public health crisis happening every day in our community. Traffickers target and exploit victims by manipulating the unmet needs and unique vulnerabilities of the individual. Trafficking overlaps with other forms of abuse and violence. There is a strong intersection between intimate partner violence and sex trafficking. Sexual assault may be a gateway crime in the recruitment process. Mutually agreed upon but fraudulent contractual agreements may be used to entrap labor trafficking victims. Victims may experience trauma bonding and feel loyalty to and empathy for the trafficker.
A survivor's decision to leave may be fraught with financial collapse, threats of harm to self and family, threats of deportation, threats of criminal conviction and overwhelming loneliness and struggles with identity and self-trust. Adolescents may fear being placed in the child welfare or juvenile justice systems more than they fear the violence and abuse perpetrated by the trafficker. Restorative healthcare addresses the immediate healthcare needs and safety of the survivor and supports the survivor in regaining self-efficacy and hope for the future.
Connection and consistency are critical to encouraging a victim to unlock their potential for recovery. This healthcare symposium will train physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, social workers, community health workers, advocates, and other frontline healthcare teammates to recognize potential indicators to human trafficking. Participants will learn the survivor's perspective from focus group research conducted by Reclaim 13, a community partner based in Chicago. Case examples will be used to teach techniques for engaging in conversations with patients about trafficking, how to handle mandated reporting, where to find help and how to document the encounter appropriately.
This conference is being held both in-person & virtually via Zoom.
