Acute Pancreatitis and Nutrition Support

This presentation covers acute pancreatitis and the effect on nutrition support presented by Mandy Fargotstein BCNSP with collaboration with Madhu Jain RD. It will cover anatomy and physiology, etiology of acute and chronic pancreatitis, diagnosis, signs and symptoms, risk factors, medications associated with acute pancreatitis, treatment and nutritional implications. A patient case is added to assist with learning topics through the presentation.

Target Audience

This course is intended for Pharmacists and Registered Dietitians.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this session, learners should be able to:

  1. Recall the anatomy and physiology of the pancreas
  2. Outline the etiology of acute pancreatitis (AP) and chronic pancreatitis
  3. Examine the risk factors and medications associated with AP
  4. Develop a treatment plan for a patient with AP, incorporating nutrition and pharmacological therapy
