14th Annual Pulmonary Hypertension Symposium

Oak Lawn, IL US
October 6, 2023

While pulmonary hypertension remains a challenging disease, there has been an increased awareness by clinicians from the routine use diagnostic tools such as doppler echocardiography and the availability of many pulmonary vasodilator drugs.  Because it is uncommon, it is difficult for team members to develop enough experience and expertise unless they are part of a specialty center.  The etiology can be multifactorial, making it difficult to know the dominant cause in some patients and thus requires a meticulous approach to arrive at the correct diagnosis.  The program is designed to a) increase knowledge of the presentation and diagnosis of the different etiologies of pulmonary hypertension and address ways to implement the latest practice guidelines into clinic practice and b) improve the competence of all teams members in managing patients who present in the community and know when to refer to specialty centers for advanced care.

This conference is being held virtually and in-person at Christ Medical Center.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for physicians, advanced practice clinicians, registered nurses, pharmacists and other health care professionals.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this session, learners should be able to:

  1. Distinguish between the classification of the pathophysiology of PAH and associated conditions.
  2. Recommend pathways of treatment and identify research targets.
  3. Analyze the ongoing research in novel treatment pathways.
  4. Identify data supportive of achieving early diagnosis and describe the long-term impact of delayed diagnosis.
  5. Integrate diagnostic evaluation, newly available medical therapies, and strategies for implementation of early treatment for PAH patients.
  6. Classify PAH patient based on risk stratification and apply this information to patient treatment plans.
  7. Contrast the differences in diagnosis and treatment of patients with interstitial lung disease with/without resultant pulmonary hypertension.
  8. Evaluate screening methods and opportunities for early referrals to PH specialists in patients with pulmonary embolism.
  9. Examine the treatment approach and patient outcomes in cases of early versus late identification of CTEPH.
  10. Apply case-based learning to perioperative management of patients with PAH.
  11. Examine the management of PAH inpatients with decompensated heart failure from presentation to hospital discharge.
  12. Interpret the current available pharmacologic treatment options for PAH.
  13. Interpret results of transition from parenteral to oral prostacyclin data and discuss implications for treatment considerations.
  14. Interpret results of SGLT2-I use in PAH patients with chronic right heart failure and discuss implications for treatment considerations and future research.
