2024 Plous Family Lecture: The Ethics of Normothermic Regional Perfusion

Thousands of people wait on the organ transplant list knowing they may never receive the phone call that could save their lives. It is estimated around 17 people die each day waiting for an organ transplant, and every 8 minutes, another person is added to the transplant list. A recent technological advancement, called normothermic regional profusion (NRP), aims to increase the quality and number of viable organs for transplant, ultimately saving more lives of those waiting for transplants. However, NRP is not without controversy, with detractors arguing it blurs the lines between life and death for the donor. This talk aims to explain and explore the ethical arguments for and against NRP and promote discussion to develop ethically sound policies for organ donation.

  • Describe NRP and its role in organ procurement
  • Identify some ethical arguments that support NRP's use, and
  • Identify the ethical arguments against NRP and why some find it objectionable
