Compassion Fatigue for the Caregiver in the Opioid Crisis

This presentation will explore the necessity of compassion for the caregiver in the opioid crisis.
Target Audience
This course is intended for psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurses, and other allied health professionals who deal with mental health issues and addiction medicine.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this session, learners should be able to:
- Describe the unique trauma; secondary trauma; compassion (empathy fatigue) and burnout particular to caregivers and first responders in the opioid crisis.
- Describe the role of the hypothalamus and amygdala in the stress response; describe the long-term effects of chronic stress.
- Consider one’s own method(s) of self-evaluation and self-care.
