Description: Rapid sequence intubation (RSI) is a common procedure performed in the critically ill patient population. The purpose of this seminar is to enhance clinicians’ understanding of medications used to facilitate successful RSI. At the end of this discussion, pharmacists should feel comfortable designing a medication and monitoring plan for patients undergoing RSI.

Objectives: ​​ 

  1. Review indications and procedural components of rapid sequence intubation in critically ill adults
  2. Assess patient- and drug-specific factors influencing the selection of induction agents during rapid sequence intubation
  3. Determine the most appropriate neuromuscular blocking agent based on patient-specific characteristics and pharmacologic considerations during rapid sequence intubation
  4. Discuss literature comparing commonly used RSI medications, including efficacy and safety outcomes
