This presentation will review how an insulin pump works including insulin delivery features, necessary supplies, the refill process, and the various types of pumps. This presentation will also review current literature on the use of insulin pumps in various inpatient care settings and how to manage such patients and their pumps.

  • Recognize the role of insulin pumps in the management of diabetes mellitus 
  • Differentiate between various types of insulin pumps including sensor-augmented pumps, automated insulin delivery systems, and patch pumps
  • Evaluate the recent literature pertaining to the use of insulin pumps in various inpatient care settings
  • Formulate an approach to managing insulin pumps in the inpatient care setting
