Description: This presentation will review the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), with emphasis on current endocrinology guidelines and institution-specific protocols involving intravenous fluids, insulin infusions, and potassium replacement. The SQuID (Subcutaneous Insulin in Diabetic Ketoacidosis) protocol, which substitutes subcutaneous insulin for IV insulin in patients with mild to moderate DKA, will also be discussed as an alternative strategy with the potential to decrease ICU admissions, hospital length of stay, and overall healthcare costs.
