Objectives

  1. Describe the key components of the hospital’s heparin drip protocol, including indications, dosing calculations, required baseline labs (such as aPTT and platelet count), and safety checks prior to initiation
  2. Demonstrate the correct initiation of a heparin infusion according to protocol by verifying orders, performing a double-check with another nurse, calculating and administering the appropriate bolus and infusion rate, and documenting all actions accurately
  3. Apply learning to document all aspects of heparin drip administration, including initial assessment, infusion rates, dose adjustments, lab results (such as aPTT), patient responses, and any adverse events, ensuring that the documentation meets hospital policy
