Topic: Get Climate Smart: Extreme Weather

Overview: Extreme weather-related events are increasing – including longer and stronger heat waves, freezes, floods, droughts, and severe storms. These events impact our patients’ health in the immediate and long-term. Severe weather events can acutely bring exposure to the elements and hazardous chemicals/pathogens, injury when attempting to stay/escape, and death. Increases in mental health crises along with the consequences of contaminated water, mold spores, and particulate matter from wildfires and damage to infrastructure (eg, electricity, roads, health care facilities) are just a few health-related extreme weather sequelae. Exploring how we can care for our patients in this evolving dynamic will be the focus for this session, particularly for those who most impacted (eg, low income, people of color, young/old, preexisting health conditions).
