Topic: Get Climate Smart: Communication

Overview: Climate change and its effects on physical and mental health are clear. Now - how do we as clinicians communicate with our patients about the impacts of climate change on their health, from anticipatory guidance to assessing and managing the consequences? This session will provide evidence-based communication strategies and scripted examples to help clinicians engage with patients in these important discussions. This practical session will explore skills to enhance communication with your patients, including conversation openers to inquire about patients’ perspectives and values, strategies to make the topic personal and concrete (e.g. replace pollution/particulate matter with “the air we breathe”) and to scripts to make the connection between patients’ health conditions and the effects of climate change (air quality, heat, extreme weather for their condition, vector-borne disease).
