Topic: When Systems and Instincts Collide: The Reality of Resuscitation Without Consent
Overview:
In the critical moments of a resuscitation attempt, instinct and systems can collide—sometimes with lasting consequences. We will explore the ethical, clinical, and emotional complexities that arise when life-saving measures are initiated without confirmed patient consent. Through national context and institutional reflection, this session examines how tools like wristbands, EHR documentation, and team communication can either safeguard or unintentionally compromise patient autonomy. A real internal case will challenge us to consider how our own instincts, system design, and moral uncertainty intersect in moments where every second counts.
Objectives:
- Understand the ethical and clinical implications of performing resuscitation without confirmed patient consent, including how code status orders guide decision-making.
- Recognize how institutional systems—such as wristbands, EHR documentation, and team communication—can either prevent or contribute to unconsented resuscitation.
- Acknowledge the emotional difficulty and moral uncertainty providers may experience when instincts to preserve life conflict with patient directives.
