Objectives:

At the end of this session, the learner will be able to: 

  1. Recognize the importance of suicide prevention in the primary care setting.
  2. Identify benefits of asking patients about suicide.
  3. Identify communication approaches and language choices that can either increase stigma and fear or promote safety, trust, and engagement when asking youth about suicide.
  4. Explain why reliance on intuition, appearance, or parental awareness is insufficient for identifying suicide risk.
  5. Implement strategies to best prepare for and increase comfort level in talking with patients about suicide.
