Overview:

The Illinois “End of Life Options for Terminally Ill Patients Act”, effective September 12, 2026, makes Illinois the 13th U.S. jurisdiction to legalize Medical Aid in Dying (MAID). This law will permit a terminally ill mentally capable person with ≤6 months to live to request, obtain, and self-administer medication that brings about death.  Healthcare entities may legally decide whether to permit or prohibit MAID; Advocate Health is not be participating in MAID at this time. This webinar will review key provisions of the law, explore clinical and ethical considerations, and use case examples to help nurses respond compassionately to patient and family questions, particularly in settings where MAID is not offered.

Objectives: Participants will be able to:

1. Describe key provisions of the 2025 Illinois MAiD law and patient eligibility requirements.

2. Discuss ethical considerations - balancing professional obligations with support for patient autonomy.

3. Identify supportive strategies to help nurses respond to patient/family questions about MAiD.

4. Identify 1-2 key take aways for your practice.
