Description: This presentation will focus on differentiating between true medication-related nephrotoxicity related to piperacillin-tazobactam use, especially when combined with vancomycin. It will provide a comprehensive review of past and current literature surrounding kidney injury following piperacillin-tazobactam use in varying populations. The presentation will conclude by challenging the current status quo that piperacillin-tazobactam causes true nephrotoxicity.

Objectives:
- Differentiate between the mechanisms of drugs causing true nephrotoxicity and pseudo-nephrotoxicity
- Recall the pharmacologic and pharmacokinetic properties of piperacillin-tazobactam and vancomycin
- Evaluate the literature surrounding the proposition that concomitant use of piperacillin-tazobactam and vancomycin leads to nephrotoxicity
- Formulate a nuanced approach to using combination therapy with piperacillin-tazobactam and vancomycin in patients at risk for nephrotoxicity
