Description: This presentation will provide a brief pharmacologic review on long-acting injectable antipsychotics, patient characteristics used to determine who may be a candidate for these medications, and strategies used to initiate a long-acting injectable antipsychotic dose regimen for the treatment of schizophrenia.

Objectives: ​​

  • Recall the pharmacology of long-acting injectable antipsychotics used for the treatment of schizophrenia
  • Formulate mitigation strategies for two common adverse drug reactions of long-acting injectable antipsychotics when used for treatment of schizophrenia
  • Evaluate characteristics of a patient within a case to determine whether they would be a good candidate for treatment with a long-acting injectable antipsychotic for the treatment of schizophrenia
  • Develop a dosing regimen for a patient transitioning from oral antipsychotic therapy to a long-acting injectable antipsychotic for the treatment of schizophrenia
