This lecture will focus on strategies for improving sepsis recognition in children including the development of a vital sign based electronic alert, human factors, as well as existing and novel biomarkers.
Objectives:
- Discuss the thought process behind the development of an electronic sepsis screening program at a large academic pediatric emergency department
- Discuss strengths and weaknesses of this recognition strategy and discuss which components are the leading drivers of improved outcomes
- Discuss emerging strategies for augmenting these processes in the future including machine learning, human factors, and biomarker based approaches
