Topic: Get Climate Smart: Rising Temperatures (Heat)

Overview: Have you noticed that it’s been warmer in the last decade or so?  Average temperatures are increasing as are the frequency, duration and intensity of extreme heat events. Heat exposure adversely impacts the young and elderly, and those who must work outside or without air conditioning. High temperatures exacerbate many common health conditions, including cardiac, respiratory, and kidney diseases and mental health with cascading impacts for those on medications and/or live in urban heat islands. This session will explore clinicians’ roles in identifying patients at risk, providing counseling regarding signs and symptoms, and recommending strategies for reducing risks.

Target Audience:  This activity is designed for advance practice clinicians, nurses, pharmacists, physicians, social workers, and members of the health care team who are interested in climate change and its impacts on health.
