Course Overview:
This session provides practical, evidence-based strategies for managing depression and anxiety in the primary care setting, from first-line treatments to advanced approaches for treatment-resistant cases. This session will highlight how to tailor care using validated screening tools, optimize therapy through augmentation strategies, and confidently monitor progress over time. Attendees will leave with tools to support better outcomes and know when to escalate care.

Course Objectives:
Upon completion of the activity, the learner should be able to:

  1. Identify first-line pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatments for major depressive disorder and anxiety disorders in the primary care setting, including severity-based treatment selection guided by validated screening tools.
  2. Apply evidence-based augmentation strategies for patients with treatment resistant depression and anxiety, including the use of adjunctive atypical antipsychotics, medication switching, and combination approaches.
  3. Implement a structured monitoring and follow-up plan using serial symptom measurement to assess treatment response, guide dose optimization, and determine appropriate timing for referral to psychiatry.
