Description: This presentation will pertain to radiological and nuclear emergency preparedness in the healthcare setting. There will be a brief discussion on the background of nuclear emergencies and the lasting impacts the nuclear events had on society both through sudden impacts and radiation exposure. Then radiation will be discussed in detail. This will include basic radiation principles, radiobiology and the pathophysiology of radiation exposure. Next the radiation preparedness program within the Advocate Healthcare organization will be discussed. This will include program bookkeeping, forms, badging, job box inventory, proper PPE, donning and doffing, and decontamination goals. Next disease states that may precipitate from radiation exposure will be discussed. Lastly, pharmacologic countermeasures will be discussed. Primary literature will be provided to support the use of these agents.
